Coming rapidly to the elephant in the room then, is it just a hairdresser’s car? Well in my own personal case I think that it literally was in the past. So, fire up the engine, and off we go – it’s such an easy car to drive in auto form, snick it into D and point it where you want to go, that’s all there is to it. The result of this is that the car is two-tone, some of it bright red where the lacquer is preserving the paint, but other panels are going pinky. Several panels on the car have no lacquer at all, others still have but it’s starting to flake off. On my car though, there is a bigger problem, which apparently is the blight of many a red car (why red?) from that era. Fortunately the fronts are fairly easily replaceable. The front wings are a major rust area, you’ll be lucky to find a car from this era with perfect front, or for that matter rear, wings. Actually, it’s not that bad on my car, I’ve seen worse, but again, for a quality brand it is surprising MB did such a poor job of rustproofing. Oh, but first, before we drive off… the other problem with the car. But hey, the wind is now in your hair, who cares about luggage? There is an ‘issue’ with boot space - the roof takes up half the already modest volume and in addition leaves you with a very small gap through which to unload your stuff. A superb piece of design, now much copied. The windows go down, the boot lid magically hinges at the back end of the car and the roof folds itself up and disappears behind you, all in about half a minute. No doubt they were simply distracted by the brilliance of the electric roof, which is actuated by a centre console switch. The interior trim does not feel like it comes from a quality brand car - I think MB were lucky that people forgave the car this when new. The door cards were both just falling off the door until I glued them back in place recently. The interior trim is not particularly worn, but it is quite flimsy. The trim inside is a little worn, but the leather is good and everything electrical, like cruise control, electric mirrors, sound system and alarm all function with no problems. The engine and gearbox run like new, and the roof works perfectly. My car is 19 years old, and has done just 53,000 miles. A huge number of them were made in silver, though other colours were available, a stunning yellow, black, white, green, blue and for the example we’re going to look at here, Imperial Red. The most common configuration for those early SLK was the R170 SLK230 Kompressor, with a 2.3 litre straight four engine fitted with a compressor – and mostly with an automatic gearbox. A lot of these changes have detracted somewhat from the original design in my opinion, so I’m very happy to be reviewing an original car, before it was messed about with and turned into something else - nice though the something else is I’m sure. The very first SLKs are now over 20 years old and I would argue they are therefore just about ready for Classic Car status – though I have no idea who actually decides these things – an autonomous collective? The car has gone through some changes over the years, notably recently becoming an SLC – which seems a bit of daft move by Mercedes but there you go. The car was an instant success, and was named the SLK, translated this stands for Sporty, Light and Short (Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz). Incorporated in the design was a ‘killer’ feature - not a totally new idea, but new to the mass market and beautifully implemented - the ‘Vario’ hydraulic roof. In the mid-1990s Mercedes Benz came up with a relatively cheap, relatively cheerful, concept for a new sports car. Lots of fun for not much cash - and surely soon to be a classic
His solo and dancing number was elegantly fluid, rhythmic and well designed, with every movement motivated and dedicated to the telling of the story. Beaty is talented and skilled at acting, singing and especially dancing is an understatement. Secondly, I took note of a young man who has a proficiency in dance and movement. Armstrong can relate to this personally, as she is family-oriented herself with a passion for God and others. Throughout, Weber’s drawing skills and expert detailing shine through. Insert them to swing Edward’s mood from geometric modern to calligraphic vernacular. The alternate glyph sets are especially inventive: capital K and lowercase k, lowercase t, and alternate lowercase g are notable. They are full of character and yet functional. In Edward, Weber’s passion for subtle but vibrant shapes is hard to miss. Hendrik Weber’s Edward is proof of that, a sans serif that carries on Johnston’s spirit, dressed in tweed, typically British and anything but neutral. Johnston’s blockletter was undoubtedly influential when it was first designed and it is still influential today. Today Johnston’s blockletter may not be as famous as Gill Sans, though through Gill’s typeface it has exerted perhaps a greater force on the progress of type and lettering over the last century. Its designer, Eric Gill, fully acknowledged his debt to Johnston. The success of that typeface, Gill Sans, helped establish what we now call the ‘humanist’ sans serif in the typographic palette. But it was not until 1928 that the Monotype Corporation released a comparable typeface onto the British market. The influence of Johnston’s sans serif is suggested in subsequent German typefaces such as Erbar (1922), Kabel and Futura (both 1927). The result was impressive and practical, and well-suited to the signs and posters in which it appeared. With this alphabet, Johnston created something new, a work-a-day display sans serif whose design was informed by Roman square capitals, humanist minuscules and old face types, but decisively shaped by simple geometry. For those familiar with Johnston’s work, the inspiration behind Edward will be immediately recognizable: the ‘blockletter’ Johnston designed for the London Underground in 1916, for use in their signs and posters. ![]() Edward is Weber’s second published typeface, joining the award-winning Lirico, released in 2008.Įdward is named in honour of Edward Johnston, calligrapher, teacher, and author of Writing & Illuminating, & Lettering (1906). And she was! And then she did it and it was such an honor and a privilege to get to work with her, and such an amazing thing that she came to do that. As we got into Season 4 and started breaking the episodes, we realized that when we get to the finale, in order for that moment to land, we need a person to represent that moment.Īnd the question came up in the room, who is the person who should represent Earth? Stacey Abrams came to mind and I texted and said, “What do you think about Stacey Abrams as the President of Earth?” I've never seen so many exclamation points in my life in response!Īnd so we reached out and set up a call with her, where Alex and I pitched her about the season, about this character, about what it would mean, and we asked her if she would be interested. However, the Changelings are visibly active centuries after the Dominion War and still up to no good.I loved Stacey Abrams as the guest star at the end of the finale and just have to ask - how did that happen? It is unclear if this particular Changeling is linked to a more nefarious organization, with the state of the Dominion and Delta Quadrant in the 32nd century currently unknown. The Changeling that Book and Tarka encounter scamming the casino certainly isn't as ambitious, transforming into a fast-moving Tribble to escape when cornered by Tarka. The Changelings haven't been seen since the Dominion War but their legacy continues to loom heavily in the Star Trek mythos, with the conflict being one that drove Starfleet to the brink of its own survival. At great cost, Starfleet emerged triumphant while Odo reunited with the Changelings in the aftermath to cure them of a species-threatening disease and help them transition through the resulting armistice. Odo learned that the Changelings originated from the Delta Quadrant where they called themselves the "Founders." The Founders commanded the Dominion, a coalition of alien races including the Vorta and Jem'Hadar, engaging Starfleet in the devastating Dominion War over the course of DS9. Like the rest of his species, Odo is able to shapeshift his physical form, with his natural state more gelatinous.
